If you are opting for a Humanist ceremony or Blessing the Motte is the perfect location for this type of service. The word Motte comes from ‘mound’ and there would years ago have been a Bailey (ditch) surrounding it. Motte and Baileys were built along the borders as lookouts and strongholds against advancing armies.

Over the years the Motte itself has been incorporated into the garden design, and is encircled by beech trees more than 200 years old which create a cathedral effect and as such an incredibly magical setting for your ceremony.

The reception can follow either with a marquee in the gardens or alternatively in the main house for the smaller scale celebrations.

Neither Humanist ceremonies or Blessings form a marriage contract in the legal sense, so most couples attend a registry office  before the ceremony for the legal formalities and to obtain a civil marriage certificate.

A humanist wedding celebration can be as romantic and creative as a couple wish. It may be as dignified and solemn as a church wedding, but with the religious element replaced by words and music that have special meaning for the individuals.

Blessings, on the other hand are a romantic way to reinforce vows that were possibly exchanged in a registry office or church.

No two ceremonies are the same – they can be traditional or unusual, designed to suit your wishes.
